Traveling With Jewelry and Valuables

Tips for Traveling With Jewelry

When traveling with jewelry it is advisable to not take any or much with you unless it is absolutely necessary.  That being said, to most women especially , their jewelry is as important clothes, shoes and make up, so I’d like to give some tips on traveling with valuables. First I believe ” valuable ” is a relative term. I have some expensive jewelry and some not so expensive jewelry and costume jewelry. Some of my not so expensive jewelry is very sentimental and very valuable to me. In the case of costume jewelry being a collector and seller of vintage costume jewelry, I know that some vintage jewelry although it is costume can be expensive and much of it would be very difficult if not impossible to replace.

Transportation

By Plane or Ship

  • always pack your jewelry and valuables in your hand luggage

  • do not leave your bags unattended at the airport or cruise terminal;

  • pack your jewelry in a jewelry organizer or in see through plastic bags for easier inspection;

By Car

  • A rental car or a vehicle with out of state license plates is a prime target for thieves that prey on tourists.

  • always make sure the car is empty and that the doors are locked before you leave it;

Traveling Out of The Country

  • It is advisable to bring copies of sales receipts, appraisal certificates or insurance papers to avoid potential problems with customs.

Hotel Rooms

  • Never leave your jewelry unattended in a hotel room, what you may think is a clever hiding place most hotel employees and thieves already know.
  • Housekeepers, maintenence people and desk clerks all have access to your hotel room and even though most are hard working honest people, many times housekeepers will leave your door proped open while cleaning and if they are distracted someone can easily sneak in.
  • Hotel room safes are not usually very sturdy and are not the best option, it lets people know that there are valuables inside. Most hotels have a hotel safe or lock boxes. The room safe is in your care not under the care of the hotel, so the hotel safe or lock box is a much better option.

Site Seeing

If you venture into a crowded area or place that seems somewhat unsafe do not flash expensive jewelry. Even if the jewelry is not expensive as in the case of cubic zirconia, thieves may not know that from a distance and you still have a chance of getting injured should someone try to rob the jewelry.

  • Try to slip your necklace or pendant inside your shirt;
  • Turn your diamond or gemstone rings with the stone toward the inside of your finger so as to not draw attention
  • Don’t remove your jewelry in a public place as in a restroom to wash your hands

At The Beach or Pool

  • The ocean is powerful and jewelry is easily lost while swimming in the ocean
  • Cold water will shrink your fingers. Living at the beach in a resort area and having worked at one of the hotels here I can tell you many many people have lost rings in the ocean or in the sand. One of the favorite pastimes of some locals is beach combing with metal detectors for that very reason.

At Home

  • While you are away on vacation it might be a good idea to store your jewelry in a safe at home or a lock box at a bank.

Insurance

  • There are companies sell insurance just for jewelry, you can check to see if your homeowners or apartment insurance will cover jewelry loss while traveling.

Security Devices

  • There are pouches, money belts and even travel safes for sale that you can use to keep your valuable safe while traveling.

You can have fun, look good and be safe while traveling but use some caution.

Why Vintage Jewelry is Eco Friendly

Go Green by Buying and Wearing Vintage Jewelry

  • Buying and wearing pre-owned vintage jewelry reuses and recycles valuable material.
  • Buying vintage jewelry reduces manufacturing processing;  it was already made years ago.
  • Buying vintage jewelry supports small businesses.
  • Many vintage jewelry pieces are rare and one of a kind so you can still wear beautiful jewelry and be environmentally friendly at the same time.
  • Rhode Island was once the ” Capitol of the World ” of costume jewelry manufacturing, therefore  much of the vintage costume jewelry around today was made in America.
  • Many jewelry manufacturers of the past used high quality materials and had high standards for craftsmanship, which is why you can still find vintage jewelry in excellent condition today.
  • Many costume jewelry manufactures of the past hired famous jewelry designers, such as Trifari, Alice Caviness, Bogoff, Kramer, Krementz, Lisner and many more.  Jewelry collectors have been buying up these ” future heirlooms “  for years.
  • Many of the famous jewelry designers of the past created such ingenious designs that their styles are timeless. Vintage jewelry comes in all styles; from funky to classic, from glitzy to tailored to simple elegance.  A lot of pieces can be found that are as contemporary today as the day they were made.
  • Much of vintage jewelry today is considered art or at the very least a feast for the eyes.
  • A vintage necklace, bracelet, brooch, ring or a pair of earrings makes a fashion statement that will be sure to get compliments.
  • Until Next Time
